corto.alto
Scottish composer, producer and multi-instrumentalist Liam Shortall, aka corto.alto, has enjoyed an exceptional breakthrough in recent years. His debut album Bad With Names was nominated for the Mercury Prize 2024 and won Best Album at the Scottish Jazz Awards.
In 2025, he followed this up with Act Of The Year at the Jazz FM Awards (a public vote, competing against Ezra Collective and Nubya Garcia) and UK Independent Breakthrough at the AIM Awards.
Now signed to Ninja Tune, corto.alto has released the singles DON’T LISTEN, VANDAL and APRIL feat. anaiis – music that clearly demonstrates his ability to cross genres seamlessly. The tracks have received extensive radio airplay worldwide (over 3000 plays in less than six weeks) and been added to the BBC 6 Music A-Playlist, while DON’T LISTEN was also included on the FC26 soundtrack.
His sound is rooted in Glasgow’s contemporary scene but moves freely between club culture, electronic music, hip-hop, soul and funk. This is music on its own terms – uncompromising yet direct.
Over the past 24 months, corto.alto and the band have played over 150 concerts, including appearances at Glastonbury (West Holts Stage) and We Out Here (closing the main stage), as well as headline performances at festivals such as Latitude, North Sea Jazz, Montreux and Cross The Tracks. A sold-out UK tour culminated in a performance for 2000 people at Glasgow’s iconic Barrowland Ballroom.
He has strong support from names such as Gilles Peterson, Jamie Cullum, BBC 6 Music, KCRW, Jazzwise, France’s FIP and Australia’s RRR, as well as editorial teams at Spotify, Apple Music and Bandcamp.
“The Scottish musician redefining jazz for a new generation” – The National
“If Hiatus Kaiyote and Masters At Work had a child, corto.alto would be it – the future is now!” – Gilles Peterson
Corto.alto is one of the most distinctive voices on the new European jazz scene – where club culture, beats and improvisation meet.
