Shabaka comes to Nefertiti: One of the greats of our time lands in Gothenburg! On Tuesday 13 October, we welcome you to one of the bookings we are proudest of this year.

When Shabaka Hutchings takes to the stage, it is not just a concert – it is an encounter with the architect behind the modern British jazz wave that has swept the globe in recent decades.

Shabaka is a musician who refuses to be confined to a single genre, form of expression, style or sound. He has shaken up London with hard-hitting political statements as the leader of Sons of Kemet and brought jazz to sweaty dance floors with The Comet Is Coming. But in the midst of all this, at the height of his success as perhaps the world's most acclaimed contemporary saxophonist, he did the unthinkable: he put down the saxophone altogether and began a new chapter.

What we will see at Nefertiti is an artist who has deconstructed his own success to find something deeper. His new voice is rooted in flutes, shakuhachi and rituals – a meditative and deeply personal soundscape centred on breathing, presence and transformation. It is as delicate as it is grand, carrying a spiritual power that places him in a direct lineage with giants such as Alice Coltrane, Pharoah Sanders and Sun Ra.

Seeing an artist of Shabaka's calibre in an intimate setting like ours is rare. He is not coming here to rest on his laurels; he is coming because the music feels urgent and necessary right now.
