Vega Trails
Experience a cinematic journey through Spain’s Sierra de Guadarrama mountain range as Vega Trails takes to the stage at Nefertiti.
Following the acclaimed debut Tremors in the Static (2022), double bassist and composer Milo Fitzpatrick (known for his work with Portico Quartet) returns with the expansive project Vega Trails. This evening, we will hear music from the new album Sierra Tracks, a work born out of Fitzpatrick’s move to the rolling landscapes north-west of Madrid.
A blend of chamber music, jazz and folk influences
While the debut album was an intimate dialogue between two musicians, the sound has now grown into something considerably larger. The inspiration comes from the magnificent views, the purple twilight and the forests of the Spanish mountains. The music moves between the dreamlike and the deeply rooted, from folk melodies in the track "Els" to the unusual sounds of local knife sharpeners in "Largo", which Fitzpatrick has translated into cello tones.
World-class musicians
At the heart of the project is still the close collaboration with saxophonist and multi-instrumentalist Jordan Smart (Mammal Hands). Smart’s ability to unite jazz with different folk traditions through instruments such as tenor saxophone, bass clarinet and the Turkish ney flute gives Vega Trails its distinctive energy. On the new material, they are also joined by piano, vibraphone and string arrangements that elevate the music into an almost cinematic experience.
More than just music – a journey towards clarity
Sierra Tracks is not only a tribute to a landscape, but also a musical reflection on mental health and the path out of the isolation of the pandemic. Through cyclical motifs and melodies, Fitzpatrick explores how movement – through running, walking and nature – can help us break patterns of thought and find acceptance.
"This album is an exploration of the relationship between our complex inner mental processes and how the tangible world of nature can help us find definition and clarity."
– Milo Fitzpatrick
