In an age when trends come and go, Division 7 have chosen a path entirely their own. By stubbornly being themselves, they have raced through three acclaimed full-length albums, two EPs and one raucous live album in just over three years. To an outsider, the recipe for success is clear: a never-ending stream of strong songs combined with a ferocious, well-oiled live machine that has clocked up mile after mile on Swedish roads. Without a helping hand from major record labels or established music media, the band have steadily built an unusually devoted following – a group of supporters more like the fans of a football team, with every gig seething like the stands during an intense derby.

Their third studio album, Långbro feelin’, was released on 27 March, a work about standing firm when everything is shaking. Here, the band move through hospital rooms and living rooms, childhood memories and broken relationships, portraying psychological fragility and love that serves as both a lifeline and a shackle. The lyrics revolve around shame, guilt and identity – around obsessive thoughts, medication and a “blue screen in the soul” – but are driven by a burning desire to fall apart rather than conform.

In contrast to the darkness, the album also carries a stubborn hope; new seeds are tucked into a pocket and fresh soil awaits cultivation. This is Division 7 at their most vulnerable and incisive: music for everyone who does not fit in but refuses to disappear. The familiar indie band are still there, but with a new dimension in which the darkness now makes room for a more positive outlook on life and a measured dose of playfulness. As they put it: “We can smile too”. With collaborations such as the one with Thomas Stenström, Långbro feelin’ cements the band’s position as one of the country’s most interesting and relevant indie acts right now.
