Widowspeak return in the finest style with their seventh album. ‘Roses’ is the work of a band with depth and a strong identity that has only grown richer, better and more beautiful over the years. Widowspeak have always had a unique ability to convey big emotions through small gestures, from the atmospherically dreamy to the starkly down-to-earth. On ‘Roses’, Widowspeak move brilliantly between the deeply romantic, the delicately nostalgic and the beauty of the everyday.
A lot has happened to songwriting couple Molly Hamilton and Robert Earl Thomas since last time: they have married, become parents and juggled day jobs as a carpenter and a waitress alongside Widowspeak. The songs have been allowed to grow freely, making room for both hopeful, dreamy romance and uncompromising realism. Unconditional infatuation leads to lifelong love, and old relationships are worn in until they feel as soft as a faded T-shirt or your beloved, well-worn jeans.
‘Roses’ draws its musical inspiration from the same sources and spectrum of influences – dream pop meets power pop, echoes of Stones and Tom Petty’s Heartbreakers, ballads for a David Lynch-inspired roadhouse, where names such as R.E.M., Yo La Tengo and Cat Power haunt the background, along with a hint of Neil Young in Hamilton’s everyday imagery. As ever, the album revolves around Hamilton’s evocative voice and Thomas’s tasteful guitar playing, produced by Thomas and recorded with their touring band, Willy Muse, Noah Bond and John Andrews (Woods, Quilt).
