Drink The Sea
Drink The Sea is a new supergroup featuring world-famous musicians who are considered among the best songwriters in their bands from the 1990s.
Peter Buck, founding member, guitarist and songwriter for R.E.M. His collaborations with other bands and singer-songwriters span dozens of albums over 40 years. His collaborations with fellow Drink The Sea member Barrett Martin include work on over 40 albums to date.
Duke Garwood, a respected British singer-songwriter and guitarist with several solo albums to his name and collaborations with Screaming Trees singer Mark Lanegan.
Alain Johannes, a Chilean-American producer, multi-instrumentalist and singer-songwriter who founded the band Eleven. His virtuoso skills have been emulated by several artists, including Chris Cornell, PJ Harvey, Queens Of The Stone Age, Them Crooked Vultures and many more.
Barrett Martin, a Grammy-winning producer, drummer and songwriter for Seattle band Screaming Trees, as well as the supergroup Mad Season. He formed the instrumental group Tuatara with Peter Buck and has worked on over 200 albums as a producer and session musician, playing on albums by R.E.M., Queens Of The Stone Age and Brazilian superstar Nando Reis, among others.
Lisette Garcia, a Mexican-American percussionist who can be heard on albums from all over the world and has also worked as a song translator for albums made in South America.
Drink The Sea began three years ago, in 2022, when Alain and Barrett jammed in Barrett's studio in Olympia, just to see what kind of magic they could conjure up together. Two years later, Barrett and Duke toured together in England and Iceland before recording songs in Reykjavik.
More material was recorded with Peter in São Paulo, and in Joshua Tree Alain jumped on the “train” and took them to his studio in Santiago, Chile, for more time in the studio. The final pieces of the production puzzle were completed in Barrett's studio in Olympia, WA, and sent to Barcelona, Spain, for mixing.
Yes, the two debut albums were literally recorded all over the world, and world music influences are strongly present, permeating the music!
The songs are built around traditional guitar, bass and drum line-ups and shimmer beautifully with the sounds of Arabic oud, Indian sitar, Indonesian gamelans and various exotic percussion instruments such as Brazilian surdo, frame drum, vibraphone, marimba and kalimba.
