For over 30 years, Beth Orton has followed her own path through the musical landscape. With a unique ability to move between folk, electronic music, jazz and classic rock, she has created a catalogue that stands outside time and genre — from the groundbreaking folktronica album 'Trailer Park' (1996) and 'Comfort of Strangers' (2006) to the self-produced 'Weather Alive' (2022). Last summer, she released her new album 'The Ground Above' — a more direct, physical and powerful record that marks a new chapter in her musical journey.

Where 'Weather Alive' inhabited a dreamlike, almost floating landscape, 'The Ground Above' is rooted in the present. The album is about survival, loss, love, renewal and finding your way back to yourself — without denying what has gone before.

“All the songs on the record see through the prism of the years from many angles at once,” says Orton. The album is deeply personal yet created collectively, with collaborations including Shahzad Ismaily, Sam Beste, Chris Vatalaro, Tom Skinner, Tom Herbert, Dave Okumu, Grey McMurry, Adrian Utley and Paul Butler.

'The Ground Above' moves between grief and love, ageing, motherhood, identity and the political unease surrounding our times. Musically, the album shifts between raw, intuitive expressions and some of Orton's most timeless melodies, bringing together influences from the Great American Songbook, spiritual jazz and improvisation.

As with 'Weather Alive', Orton produced the album herself. The result is a record that offers no easy answers, but insists on presence, connection and human resilience. 'The Ground Above' is about standing firm in the strength you have earned, honouring what has gone before and creating new ground beneath your feet — one step at a time.
