Azizzi Romeo

Heavy bass, vibrant roots and a voice that carries both a legacy and a future of its own.

On 9 October, we welcome Azizzi Romeo to Nefertiti – with none other than Walshy Fire from Major Lazer as executive producer behind the project and some of our absolute favourite musicians in the band.

Azizzi grew up in Linstead, Jamaica, with roots reggae as his mother tongue and the legendary Max Romeo (Chase The Devil!) as his father. By the age of eight, he was already at the microphone alongside his brother. After touring internationally with his father, he has found his own sound, where classic, conscious roots meets electronic influences and personal reflections.

On “Signs Of The Time”, together with Guiding Star Orchestra, that sound becomes a powerful plea for peace and unity in a world on fire. The spirit of 1970s roots is ever-present, but the music looks forward. Max Romeo can also be heard here on one of his final recordings – a deeply moving meeting of generations, united in their belief in music’s ability to stand against the darkness.

And for us at Nefertiti, there is another reason to look forward to it. The band features Denmark’s Bremer/McCoy, who, together with Steven Jess Borth II, are also part of The Mighty Tiny & The Many Few and I Am An Instrument. These are two acts particularly close to our hearts, whose records are often spinning in our Jazz Kissabar before jazz concerts. Those of you who tend to arrive early have very likely already fallen in love with their sound.

Now we get to experience them in a new setting, with Azizzi Romeo’s voice at the centre and Jamaica’s roots tradition as the foundation.

A Friday for deep basslines, open hearts and a dance floor to gather on. See you on 9 October.
