Wicked

A musical in two acts with music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz. Book by Winnie Holzman. Based on the novel by Gregory Maguire. Directed by Samuel Harjanne. Swedish translation by Calle Norlén.

The green musical Wicked tells the story of what happened in the land of Oz before Dorothy arrived (in the classic film Trollkarlen från Oz), from the two witches’ perspectives. It tells how the unlikely friends Elphaba and Galinda found each other, became the wicked and the good witch respectively, and managed to overcome the evil wizard’s tyranny. It is a story of exclusion, courage and love, told through magic, imagination and fantastic music. Several of the songs, including “Defying gravity”, have become major hits.

Now musical theatre stars Feline Andersson and Anna Salonen return to their breakthrough roles as Elphaba, “the wicked witch of the west”, and Galinda, who becomes the good Glinda, respectively.

Wicked is one of the world’s most popular musicals. The original production had its world premiere on Broadway in 2003 and its West End premiere three years later. The Swedish premiere at GöteborgsOperan in 2023, directed by Samuel Harjanne, was (and remains) the largest-ever production of the musical, with an expanded orchestra, a large cast and breathtaking staging.
