Det går an
Det går an – an opera on a journey through Sweden Join us on a musical journey through 19th-century Sweden – from Stockholm to Mariestad, along the Göta Canal and straight into a love story about freedom, independence and the courage to follow your own path.
Svenska Kammarkören presents Daniel Fjellström's opera "Det går an", based on Carl Jonas Love Almqvist's celebrated novel from 1839. An opera in concert format, with choir, piano trio and vocal soloists at its heart, and direction, movement and lighting helping to tell the story. All singing is in Swedish.
We meet Sara, an independent woman who runs her family's glazing business, and Albert, a non-commissioned officer who courts her. Sara is in Stockholm to buy diamonds for cutting glass, and on her journey home by steamboat along the Göta Canal, they meet and continue travelling together – from Stockholm towards Lidköping. Their relationship develops on board and along the canal, and we follow them on a journey where love, expectations and life choices are put to the test.
When Jonas Love Almqvist wrote the novel "Det går an" in 1839, it attracted considerable attention. Here was a male author who allowed a woman to assert her right to love without having to give up her independence, her work and her own life. The issue was controversial, to say the least, at the time – and still feels relevant today.
Daniel Fjellström's music gives the story rhythmic energy, melodic charm and warmth, while Svenska Kammarkören makes the choir an important part of the drama. The semi-staged format needs no elaborate sets – the music, lighting, movement and imagination are enough to take us on board the boat and let us follow Sara and Albert on their journey.
Now the novel takes on new life in Svenska Kammarkören's condensed, semi-staged version. An intimate and vibrant operatic experience where the music, story and imagination create the stage setting. Welcome aboard a journey through Sweden, love and time – and discover why "Det går an" still has something to say to us.
Running time: Approximately 90 minutes.
A warm welcome to you all!
