Big Stage Jacyz, Göteborg
Nik Kershaw
On 22 May, Jacy’z welcomes a celebrated guest: one of the most iconic songwriters and performers of the 1980s.
Nik Kershaw, the man behind timeless hits such as Wouldn’t It Be Good, The Riddle and I Won’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me, takes to the stage for an evening filled with classic pop gems, musical excellence and highlights from an impressive career.
Born Nicholas David Kershaw in Bristol in 1958 and raised in Ipswich, his passion for music was sparked as a teenager after watching a television documentary about David Bowie. Influenced by artists such as T-Rex, Deep Purple, Simon & Garfunkel and Genesis, he quickly developed his own musical style. After several years in local bands and later as a professional guitarist, his career took off when he signed with MCA Records in 1983.
His breakthrough came with the singles I Won’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me and Wouldn’t It Be Good, followed by the critically acclaimed debut album Human Racing. In 1984, Kershaw became one of the world’s biggest pop stars, with several international hits, extensive European tours and the successful album The Riddle. The following year, his success continued with world tours and a high-profile appearance at the historic charity concert Live Aid.
After stepping out of the spotlight in the late 1980s, Kershaw established himself as one of Britain’s most respected songwriters and producers. He has collaborated with a range of international artists, including Elton John, Cliff Richard, Bonnie Tyler, Ronan Keating, Gary Barlow and Sia. As a songwriter, he is best known for the smash hit The One and Only, performed by Chesney Hawkes.
Kershaw continues to write, record and tour around the world to this day. His latest album, Oxymoron, was released in 2020 and shows that his creativity and songwriting talent remain as strong as ever. Over the course of his career, he has been praised by music icons such as Eric Clapton and Miles Davis, nominated for four Brit Awards and described by Elton John as "the best songwriter of his generation".
When Nik Kershaw visits Jacy’z on 22 May, there will be a unique opportunity to experience an artist whose music has touched several generations. An evening filled with nostalgia, energy and timeless songs that continue to inspire fans around the world.
