Clapper
A celebration of community, chemistry and creative freedom Following the success of their acclaimed debut album On Tempo and live release Under The Radar, Danish quartet CLAPPER return with their new album With Friends.
With Friends, released on 6 November, develops CLAPPER’s distinctive sound alongside an international line-up of guest artists, including Walter Smith III, Sanyu, Musina Ebobisse, Mathias Heise, Oilly Wallace, Ronja Rose Andersson and Jonas Due.
In true CLAPPER spirit, the album blends soul jazz with instrumental hip-hop and R&B, spiced with world-class improvisation from some of the scene’s leading improvisers. From Walter Smith III’s masterful saxophone solos and Sanyu’s soulful singing to Ronja Rose Andersson’s atmospheric vocal harmonies, each guest brings their own distinct character, while everything remains rooted in CLAPPER’s collective sound.
“We’ve never been interested in fitting into a single genre,” says guitarist Jeppe Lavsen. “The music grows out of playing together, experimenting and trusting each other creatively. With this album, we simply opened up the circle to friends and musicians we admire ourselves.”
The core of CLAPPER still consists of Frederik Emil Bülow (drums), Adrian Christensen (bass), Jeppe Lavsen (guitar) and Malthe Jepsen (Rhodes & synth). Together, the quartet continue to create dynamic arrangements, sharp rhythmic shifts and the live energy that has become a central part of the band’s identity.
Politiken described a CLAPPER concert as “an almost perfect experience” and wrote that the band’s music “activates both the brain and the heart”, while GAFFA noted that CLAPPER had proved that “a frontperson is overrated”. With Friends builds on the same idea: less focus on the individual and more on interplay, trust and shared musical expression. This time, friendship is the frontperson.
The album was mixed by August Wanngren and mastered by Emil Thomsen, with cover artwork by Luca Ion Christakopoulos.
