SPELA JOHN HOOD

One of the stories on the Sockerspelet map concerns the black entertainer John Hood, who performed in Gothenburg in the autumn of 1877 with “the wild man – the cannibal from Australia”. Hood presented himself in a range of spectacular roles for a white audience at a time characterised by exoticism, racism and a deeply colonial world order. The physical theatre production Spela John Hood – which had its world premiere at 3:e Våningen in December 2025 – explores how we can understand the mechanisms behind John Hood’s practice in his own time, as well as its lasting effects on us today.
