Few artists in Sweden today have followed their own inspiration as uncompromisingly as Josef Slunge. Just a couple of years into his career, he has moved freely between genres, sounds and forms of expression, without losing the essence of the storytelling and communication that drive him forward.

His debut album ”ikväll, inatt, men aldrig imorgon” (2022) attracted attention from P3, Aftonbladet, Nöjesguiden, Göteborgs-Posten and Gaffa, among others. It was followed by the mixtape ”I LOVE YOU” (2024) and the single ”Zoey” – a duet with Håkan Hellström that introduced Slunge’s music to a new audience. As a live performer, he has continued to grow from venue to venue through both club gigs and guest appearances alongside artists including Håkan Hellström and Cleo.

As his work has progressed, Slunge has developed a more organic, band-based sound, with songs increasingly emerging through jam sessions and collaborative music-making with Gustav Olea Aspenrot, rather than traditional laptop production. This approach shapes the forthcoming album, which will be released this autumn.

– We’ve been very keen to retain the organic, gritty and human elements of the process. This is our way of rebelling against today’s highly polished, almost – or often – AI-influenced soundscape that seems to dominate the charts, says Josef Slunge.

The music is also marked by a move back towards what feels like home, with family, relationships and the musical influences of his upbringing playing a greater role in his sound.

Lyrics have always been central to Slunge’s artistry, from his early recordings to the poetry workshops he runs for young people in Malmö and Göteborg. The shift from rap towards a more singing-based style has brought new challenges, but writing remains the foundation of his work. The new music continues to explore themes such as complicated relationships, escape and identity, with greater emphasis on a more stripped-back and direct approach.
