Carl Orff: Carmina Burana
Carmina Burana is the best-known composition by the German composer Carl Orff (1895-1982), a magnificent choral work first performed in Frankfurt am Main in 1937.
Orff, chiefly influenced by Mozart and Monteverdi, became known for his exploration of folk and medieval sounds.
Orff found the texts for Carmina Burana – a mixture of the Latin and Bavarian of the time – in a collection of poems and songs discovered in a Benedictine monastery in Bavaria, probably written down from the early 13th century onwards.
Although the language may be difficult to interpret, the spirit of the music is still easy to understand!
