Saltstänk & Smuggelsprit
On the coast of Halland stands the grand and beautiful “Badhotell Klitterviken”. Well… it was grand when it was built, once upon a time.
Now, in the late 1920s, after years of dwindling guest numbers, the seaside hotel has definitely seen better days.
Yet this is a fact its pompous owner Estrid (Helena Aspeflo) stubbornly refuses to acknowledge.
In her world, Klitterviken still sparkles, and she does everything she can to keep the illusion alive.
She constantly nags her henpecked husband Hubert (Håkan Klamas) to do whatever they can to survive and, above all, keep up the appearance of an exclusive seaside hotel, even though the walls tell a very different story.
These are the days of prohibition and alcohol ration books, and a great deal of German spirits is being smuggled across the Kattegat.
So, behind his wife’s back, hotel owner Hubert has struck a deal with one of the west coast’s biggest smuggling kingpins, Konrad Stålberg (Daniel Träff), to earn a little extra money.
A large consignment of smuggled spirits has been delivered to the hotel overnight and must now be moved on.
The whole deal would surely go quite smoothly were it not for the fact that Estrid has booked a wake at the hotel that very same day for the wealthy widow Stråhle (Ewa Roos), whose late husband chaired Halland’s temperance board.
The widow has also promised to donate a considerable sum of money to the hotel, provided the wake proceeds in a calm and dignified manner.
The owners’ daughter Alfrida (Jeanette Capocci) also turns up unexpectedly at the hotel.
She is usually based in Gothenburg, but now she is on a deeply personal mission – to expose her lover, whom she suspects of being unfaithful.
The fact that she has also recently lost her job and blown most of her parents’ money in the city’s jazz clubs and dance halls… well, those are details she has taken the greatest care not to share with Mum and Dad.
Naturally, trouble is not long in coming.
Pastor Livhed (Mikael Riesebeck), who is to conduct the memorial service, turns out to have narcolepsy and keeps falling asleep.
The local postman Dag-Otto Flink (Jojje Jönsson) turns up to “help out”, but eventually no longer knows whether he is a postman, smuggler, waiter or priest.
The chatty and unfiltered Rut (Annika Andersson) and her mumbling, stumbling husband Ragnar (Mikael Riesebeck), who is eager for a swim, check into the hotel and inevitably find themselves unwittingly caught up in the chaos.
With a crumbling seaside hotel full of smuggled spirits, a wandering corpse, the looming threat of the liquor police, far too many priests and a coffin that never seems to contain what it should – complete mayhem soon breaks out!
Expect a drop-dead funny, salt-splashed seaside farce with far too little room in the coffin!
